“Gallery Z Selections”

An Exhibition Highlighting the Gallery Z Collection
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 15, 2007, 5-9pm
Show Dates: November 13 – December 18, 2007

Gallery Z announces the opening reception of “Gallery Z Selections,” an exhibition of new work from the 15 artists of Gallery Z’s diverse private collection, most of which have never been shown before. The opening will take place on Thursday, November 15 from 5-9pm, and the show will continue through December 18, 2007.

Gallery Z’s collection represents artists from around the globe, and includes 2D and 3D artwork - photography, sculpture, painting and etching. While the artists cover a wide array of talent and backgrounds, an example of one that will be featured is Mikhail Shemyakin. Shemyakin was born in 1943 in Moscow but raised in East Germany. He returned to Russia in 1957 to attend Academy of Arts at the Repin Art School in St. Petersburg but was ultimately expelled for his failure to conform to Socialist Realist ideologies. He developed his philosophy of Metaphysical Synthesism in 1967. This research was dedicated to the "creation of a new form of icon painting based on the study of religious art of all ages and peoples." In 1971, he moved to France where he gained popularity with his art. He moved to New York in 1981. He has since received five Honarary Doctorates and his work is featured in collections and museums all over the world.

Berge Zobian, the Gallery’s Founder, Owner and Director will share the curatorial work of this exhibition with Artist and Curatorial Assistant Julian Penrose. Born in Brazil, Penrose is a collage artist and sculptor creating work from a large library of collected and found materials. While the Exhibition Room will show the ‘selection’ from Zobian and Penrose, the Collection Room on the opposite side of the gallery will continue to show the rest of the artists that Gallery Z has represented over the years. Thursday, November 15 is the last official Gallery Night for the 2007 season. The program will resume in March 2008. Gallery Z will continue the tradition of 3rd Thursday receptions throughout the winter.
