Currently, Julian Penrose is creating a body of work composed of a myriad of processes: ‘cut and paste’ from a collection of saved and found paper materials, transfer images burnished from newsprint images, and incorporation of salvaged objects. These tight architectural compositions are often found to be reminiscent of Cornell’s boxes and Rauschenberg’s constructions. The heart of the work is in how the fashion of unrelated subjects and objects, when juxtaposed, often randomly, amazingly, sheds glimpses of the irony, satire, beauty, and truths of everyday life. These ‘charettes’ are strengthened by the inclusion of a personal journalism, past and present. As of late, the work has evolved into works that literally stand on their own - statues, or trophies, as the artist fondly calls them. Often, they are constructed in the spirit of architectural monuments and follies, but they continue in the same language of the larger body of work. The artist desires to illuminate the great likeness between ‘fine’ and ‘ordinary,’ how each is alike to the other, how they are adorned. These works range in many sizes and forms progressing on up to large framed pieces from note cards, journals, and gift boxes, to smaller collages and sculptures. The artist has recently moved from Seattle, Washington, to Providence, Rhode Island, and looks forward to involving himself with this dynamic community. Julian is available to show his work at his studio - please inquire. He can be commissioned to create works for events, celebrations, or personal interests, from single pieces to a series, an invite, card, or even a centerpiece. He is also available to teaching others how to create and cultivate their own visions. List of Pieces: 1. Uruguay 2. Ode to the Urn 3. No War 4. Yard Limit 5. Blue Marble II 6. L'Explorateur
